Description

St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Grodno is one of the main attractions of the city. It is situated on the main square and its doors are open from the early morning till late evening. That’s why so many tourists like this place. For its long history (about 300 years) the Cathedral hasn’t changed. An idea of building the cathedral belongs to a polish king Stefan Batory who had chosen Grodno as one of his favorite residences and donated much to it. One of the main features of the cathedral is a wooden 21 m high altar which is decorated with the statues of saints and apostols. It has been constructed in 1736 and tinted to marble. Special beauty to the cathedral bring supporting columns decorated with iconostasis also made from wood. Its fresco paintings dated 1752 consists of lots of compositions which are placed in arched niches. The rich ornamentation and composition of the cathedral amazes from the first sight.
